Winter spraying of deciduous trees

Winter is the ideal time to spray deciduous trees, ornamental shrubs and roses, many of which are pest and disease prone. Offer the following tips to customers planning to spray a tree this winter:

  • Spray when the tree is leafless and dormant. Some trees will need to be sprayed at specific time (eg. peach trees for leaf curl – check labels).
  • Choose a calm day. A windy day will make the job extra messy and less effective.
  • Spray roses immediately after pruning, while still bare of leaves.
  • Wear suitable protective clothing and always wear safety glasses.
  • Begin spraying at the tips of the branches and work your way down to the base of the trunk. You can also spray the underside of tree branches and around the roots.
