Simple steps to successfully stain exterior timber

Apply one coat for a semi-transparent finish or two coats (or more) to achieve a more opaque look.

  1. Prepare all timber (new and previously coated) by cleaning with Cabot’s Deck Clean following label instructions.
  2. For previously coated surfaces, test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the timber. If the water beads on the surface, repeat the application of Cabot’s Deck Clean. If the water is absorbed into the timber, it is ready for coating.
  3. Apply one coat of Cabot’s Water Based Deck & Exterior Stain to timber using a Cabot’s Decking Applicator or a quality synthetic brush. Apply along the length of the board including exposed edges and end grain.
  4. Allow to dry for 2 hours.
  5. If a more opaque look is required, apply a second coat as per the technique described above.
